The EU wants two more months to consider the final approval of the Brexit deal, which was struck between the two sides two months ago. On Christmas Eve, the two sides struck a deal on future trade relations. The European Parliament has provisionally approved this deal until the end of February 2021.

In the time between Christmas and the expiration of the deadline, the European Parliament would take the time to critically review the deal. However, it now appears that the European Parliament needs more time. Should the reflection period not be extended through April, the European Parliament will still decide on the deal at the end of February.
